We took the kids to Disneyland Paris over the New Year period. The kids loved it! We flew from Southampton Airport with Air France to Paris, Charles de Gaulle (CDG). It’s a big airport, I think we took longer taxiing on the runway that we did actually flying! Flight was good and we had an simple transfer to our Hotel – it took about 45 minutes. We stayed at the Moevenpick Dream Castle just on the outskirts of the park. It takes about 5 minutes to get there on a shuttle bus.
The hotel was nice a the room was pleasant. We popped down to the park not long after we arrived to get a feel for the journey etc. And then just settled in for the next 3 days of go go go! Friday morning we were up at 7am and in the park for just after 9am. First stop was actually getting Cinderella’s autograph and picture, we she was just over the moon with. And we then hit every ride in town! I won’t go into detail over everything we did, but we pretty much saw everything in the park. A hilight for Rebekah was later on during the Princess’s Parade, Cinderella picked out Rebekah in the crowd and came over and said “Hello Rebekah” – She was over the moon! That and shaking Tinkerbell’s hand on New Years Eve during the Fantalusion parade. Jacob erally enjoyed himself all though it took a little more “warming up” for him at times. I think Rebekah is just about the right age a 5, but Jacob is a little young at 3.
Friday in the Park was very cold, but we had anticipated that and were all wearing Long Johns and thermals. However it snowed quite heavily which was lovely at first, but by the end of the day it was warming up and the snow became sleet and it started to become a little much.
My only gripe with the whole thing was people’s politeness. I found many people to be extremely rude, especially in the area of Queing. I was proud of my children for their patience and politeness when they were trying to get pictures with characters or get them to sign their books – however many other children and adults were extremely rude and would complete push a child out of the way to get in front. Although I can accept this a little from younger children, I cannot accept it at all in grown adults. Unfortunatley Disney in Europe seemed to bring out many of the National characteristics and stereotypes of the visitors. I doubt I would return to Paris again.
Our horror story of the trip was attempting to get the shuttle bus after midnight of New Year’s Eve/Day. We were toward the front of a queue that became a few thousand in number – and the pushing, crushing, and fighting became very scary. We ended up crushed into a bus with children screaming and crying, adults scared witless and French security and authorities seemingly care free of what was happening. With hindsight – I wouldn’t do that again! I just figured that clearing the park after New Years Eve would have been a well tuned process by now – to be fair the Disyness shuttles that serviced the Disney Hotels seemed to have little problems it was only the buses covering the none Disney Hotels that completely messed up.
Apart from the snow, Disneyland in Florida seems so much better. That said I didn’t go to Florida with kids!
