Cashew Nuts have become the latest food stuff to make it back onto my ok list… I’ve been avoiding them for years!
Cashew NutsVictoria and I did the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge this year. It was my second year and her first. We got there about 0:15am after a short and easy journey, my house afterall is only about 30 minutes away. Again the organisation was splendid, and getting into the car park was effortless. We walked the mile down to the stones and took some time wandering about and through them. It has to be noted that there are a lot of people at the stones, around 25k, and a lot of them are drunk or stoned. I’m not sure if I understand why some of then take the trouble to visit, but I guess being drunk or stoned must be a crucial part of the excercise for them. Sometimes movement around the stones can be a little difficult due to the number of “discarded hippies” littering the floor, however you can usually avoid standing on someone’s head.
At about 2:15am we trekked back to the car for refreshments and a little time out before heading back to the stones for about 4:15am reading ourselves for the rising sun.
This year the sky was clearer of cloud than last year, so the sun made her appearance over the hills, bang on time at 4:58am as opposed to 5:25am when she finally breached the clouds last year. So for that reason this year seemed so much better, oh, and the little matter of being able to experience it with my wife.
Later this year I intend to visit again for the Winter Solstice Sunset – December 21st – looking forward to that already.

Well I never… 3 nil down at half time, I was on my way to the pub. We’d laid down and handed the game to Milan. I didn’t believe there was any chance that we could get 3 goals back from Milan. Then after half time Gerard turns the game around. He propelled his team forward time after time until we got the 3 goals back. Eat That! Each time my screams getting louder and louder; running the risk of waking the kids. Penalties! I’d have been happy at this stage, we’d made a game of it and should we now lose on penalties then fair play… but what a contest… Dudek plays a star and Liverpool take the cup home for keeps… who would have thought it…
The midnight engine DDR port is about 75% done.
The base engine has been changed to handle most of the differences in a global fashion, however, I have created multiple versions of a mechanic where needed. eg. A scenario writer chooses which type of battle system, recruitment system, etc…
Lately I have got caught up the the frontend – this has been rewritten to allow easy change, the idea being that scenario writers can affect the frontend as well. However this has been much more of a pain than I anticipated and has, to be honest, bogged me down!
I got over a major hurdle today, and thus I hope to get back on track.
The graphics system has completely changed from the LOM version, and anyone who has seen the screenshots will admit it looks lovely. The whole engine works with a patch system allowing for the terrain to change depending on which location it is, this means that the panormics look differently all the time. This process is also used in the tunnles which allows the tunnels to have distinct appearnces depending on where you are.
Ther resolution is 1024x768x32 – which is causing some speed issues at the moment, due to the amount of graphic work being implemented. For example, there is a haze layer that is applied over the seven sizes(distance) of graphics. In some way almost every pixel is adjusted a number of times before being written to the screen. This will all get sped up at the end.
Jure has produced lots of new graphics, and has worked with Bill to use the DDR shield templates and produce TME versions – thus keep consistency across the midnight games.
The last work that I know Jure was working on was the fog system, and we also discussued and inverse landscaping for the sky.
I recently implemented all of Andrews TME mods that he used for WOTS into the new codebase, and will be handing a version of TME over to him real soon so that he can hopefully get moving around the DDR map in the WOTS engine.
Hopefully, once I had it over, requests from Andrew combined with my own needs will move the project along.
Lords of midnight, Doomdark’s Revenge, The Midnight EngineWell now that I have a link from Struggling Author; I’m going to have to start writing something important or interesting! Hmm…. That will be a challenge.
Actually since Jean Yves has also pointed out tht I’m turning into a news aggregator, I really should make more of an effort. I’ve been slacking of late!
