It’s the fall…

The leaves have come down heavy today. Our garden has plenty of large trees on the perimeter fence. Horse Chestnut and Oak, however it always suprises me every year the different stages these trees are at. Looking out from my study window, the view in the picture, there are two trees that are so much earlier than all the rest. They are only about 50 metres at most from the rest of the trees, but they always flower, leaf, produce conkers, and drop their leaves before the rest. By about 2 weeks. As you can see they have already done their autumn shedding. However, the rest of the trees started the big push today… so my garden is now covered in a blanket of leaves.

FOREVER AUTUMN
Justin Hayward

The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you’re not here.

I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear
I wish that I was flying with them
Now you’re not here.

Like the sun through the tres you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away

Through autumn’s golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
’cause you’re not here
’cause you’re not here
’cause you’re not here

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My lift will be Forever Autumn
’cause you’re not here
’cause you’re not here
’cause you’re not here

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away.

Through autumn’s golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
’cause you’re not here
’cause you’re not here
’cause you’re not here

Oh the pain…

Put my back out at the weekend, and every day since it’s been getting worse… can only sit at my computer for about 5 minutes at a time now; just no support for my back. It’s also worse in the morning after a night of muscle tightening. Best position seems to be lying on my side on the sofa… TWIN PEAKS anyone?! 🙂

Twin Peaks

Laura Palmer - Wrapped in plastic I’ve started re-watching in the evenings to try and stimulate my mind a little. “All work and no play make Ben and Jerry dull boys…”, and I so miss it… on the whole, Twin Peaks was fabulous TV, yes there are some dodgy bits, yes there is some dubious acting, but as a general rule it’s great. I’d love to see a cut with parts of the incedental stuff taken out..

I have always been dissapointed by the fact that more Twin Peaks or Twin Peaks spin offs were not developed… Just a show about Lynch’s view of the FBI would be fantastic alone… Agent Dale Cooper, Albert Rosenfield, Gordon Cole, Chet Desmond. I think Twin Peaks alone was responsible for my need to be able to drink coffee black (“Black as midnight on a moonless night.”)

Coop and Albert have some of the most mermorable lines ever, just thinking of Albert alone, almost all his lines are memorable…

ALBERT
What the hell kind of a two-bit operation are they running out of this tree house, Cooper?

ALBERT
I have seen some slipshod backwater burgs, but this place takes the cake.

ALBERT
What are you waiting for, Christmas? We’ve got work to do damn it. They’re putting this girl in the ground tomorrow and we’ve wasted half the day traveling out here to the middle of nowhere

ALBERT
Mr. Horne, I realize that your position in this fair community pretty well … guarantees a venality and sincerity and uh … a rather irritating method of expressing yourself. Stupidity however, is not a necessarily inherent trait. Therefore, please listen closely. Your can have prestigefuneralplans any ol’ time. You dig a hole, you plant a coffin. I however can not perform these test next year, next month, next week or tomorrow. I must perform them now. I’ve got a lot of cutting and pasting to do gentlemen so please why don’t you return to your porch rockers and resume whittling.

ALBERT
Oh yeah, well I’ve had about enough of morons and half wits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells … and you chowder head yokel, you blithering hayseed. You-you-you’ve had enough of me?

And I could go on – Albert hasn’t even finished 2 episodes and he has more quotes than I can shake a stick at…

I just wish someone would hurry up and get the rest of the episodes out on DVD – my video player is dead so I can’t watch all my videos. I’ve read somewhere that Paramount are putting it out around spring 2006.

Exports from the North

It’s that time of year again. As we get ready for bonfire night over the weekend, we had a moments panic when we realised that we hadn’t imported our must haves; Black Peas and Parkin. With only 2 days to go and Black peas need soaking overnight, we had to get some in the post today. Thankfully… father to the rescue and our supply should be with us with a day to spare!

Life would be so much easier if I could go to any shop and actually buy things from up north! You’d think Asda would have them!

Ask for “Black Peas” and you get the response; “Black Eye Peas?”… ask for Parkin and you’re asked; “Long or Short Stay?”

You’ll notice no direct wiki link either for those terms – like that’s going to work! You’ll notice no pictures either! What is the world coming too?

The North-South Culinary divide…

Now that I’m on the topic of food…

There is a definite North/South divide in England when it comes to food.

Pudding, Chips, Peas, Gravy, and a fish.Firstly if we take the good old staple Chippy. It is very hard to find a chip shop that will sell , , or Sauce. The exception for curry sauce is chippies that are Chinese take aways. If you are lucky enough to find such a , they generally sell the gravy etc as an extra in a little cup. You get no chance of eating it to go… what ever happened to take out trays? Also the pies down south are awful, they generally seem to be plastic wrapped Pukka Pies, whereas in the north they tend to be fresh Hollands Pies. Worse yet is that they don’t sell Steak and Kidney puddings… and even if they did there’d be no tray for it, or gravy to pour over it. All supermarkets sell Hollands products in packs of 4… in the south – nothing. There are now a few Asda’s starting to stock their products, however on the whole I have to import my supplies.

Greggs is a pretty universal pie shop now, however there is a subtle difference depending where in the country you live. Greggs in Newcastle sell Ham and , but by the time you get to Manchester you can’t buy this. Manchester have decent , my particular favourite being Potato and Meat ( note the order ), however as you move south these are replaced with inferior pasties and the Potato and meat is not even available.

Seeded Batch Warburton’s bakery is a good northern baker. You can now get a small amount of their products in southern supermarkets. I recently found that sainsbury’s were selling their Seeded Batch which is just fantastic for sandwiches, but even better toasted. Other products that are a Warbutons must… Oven Bottoms and Toastie. Although beware, the Toastie loaf is generall taller than your toaster! 🙂
